Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. It is bordered by Niger in the east, Benin in the southeast, Togo and Ghana and Ivory Coast in the south, and in the west and north by Mali.

The country consists, for the most part, of a vast lateritic plateau in the West African savanna, approximately 650-1000 ft above sea level. This plateau is slightly inclined toward the south and notched by valleys formed by the three principal rivers, the Black, White and Red Voltas, and their main tributary, the Sourou. These rivers flow southward and meet in Ghana. They are alternately dry or in flood and all are unnavigable. In general, the land is dry and poor.

History of Burkina faso

Once the seat of the powerful Mossi empire, Burkina Faso today is one of the poorest countries in the world. The decline began in the late 19th century when the French began parceling off parts of Burkina Faso to neighboring Niger, Mali and Chad, and then began shipping workers from Burkina Faso (then known as Upper Volta) to work French plantations in Côte d’Ivoire. One of the most outspoken anti-colonization advocates, Burkina Faso received independence from France in 1960. But the post-independence era has not been easy. Under Burkina Faso’s first president, deposed in a 1966 military coup, the country headed into an era of rampant corruption It changed its name to Burkina Faso, meaning “country of honest men,” soon after, but decades of economic and political instability, coupled with an unsuccessful flirtation with socialism in the 1970s, followed...More on Burkina Faso's History.

When to Go

As with most of West Africa, the best time to go is weather related. November to February are the cooler months of the year, although the dusty Harmattan winds might temper your enthusiasm between the months of December and February. If you're going in an odd-numbered year, the film festival starts in late February, and if in an even year, the cultural festival begins early April.

What to do in Burkina Faso

The southwest of Burkina Faso, around Banfora, offers a number of hiking opportunities, particularly around the rock formations and waterfalls of Sindou. It’s also a great area for motor bike, mobylette or bicycle tours (weather permitting). The area around the Karfiguéla waterfalls is suitable for camping. Outdoor accommodation makes a nice change and the scenery is spectacular, particularly in the rainy season.

Events of Burkina Faso:

If you’re in Burkina Faso in an odd-numbered year, don’t miss the Pan-African Film Festival. Ouagadougou tarts itself up and puts on its metaphorical lippy to host this festival that showcases up-and-coming West African film makers. Though none of the participants have Spielbergian fame, a number of Pan-African-winning directors...more.

Economy of Africa Africa is the world’s poorest inhabited continent: the United Nations’ Human Development Report 2003 (of 175 countries) found that positions 151 (Gambia) to 175 (Sierra Leone) were taken up entirely by African nations. It has had (and in some ways is still having) a shaky and uncertain transition from colonialism, with increases in corruption [...]
Politics in Africa Colonial Africa Colonialism had a destabilizing effect on what had been a number of ethnic groups that is still being felt in African politics. Prior to European influence, national borders were not much of a concern, with Africans generally following the practice of other areas of the world, such as the Arabian peninsula, where [...]
