Burundi

Burundi used to call itself the Switzerland of Africa (a title that was also claimed by neighboring Rwanda). But while it has mountains, the country has known little Swiss-style peace or neutrality, especially in the past few years. The same ethnic tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi that resulted in one of the world’s most terrible atrocities in Rwanda in 1994 have been seething in Burundi for decades. The country’s ongoing civil war may yet escalate into a similar tragedy. Until the situation changes, travelers would do best to go elsewhere in Africa for mountainous scenery...More Information on Burundi.

Climate, Vegetation and Fauna

Burundi in general has a tropical highland climate, with a considerable daily temperature range in many areas. Temperature also varies from one region to another, chiefly as a result of differences in altitude. The central plateau enjoys cool weather, with an average temperature of 20°C. The area around Lake Tanganyika is warmer, averaging 23°C (73°F). Bujumbura’s average annual temperature is 25°C (78°F). Rain is irregular, falling most heavily in the northwest. Dry seasons vary in length, and there are sometimes long periods of no rain. However, four seasons can be distinguished; the long dry season (June – August); the short west season (September-November), the short dry season (December-January) and the long wet season (February- May).

Travel Warning:

Burundi remains a dangerous destination. Fighting is at its worst in outlying areas but gunfire is not uncommon on the streets of the capital, Bujumbura. Civilians, the Burundi military and government officials have been targeted, and the presence of a South African peace force has failed to curb hostilities.
